<image:caption>Nathan Lewis presented a poster at the Animal Behaviour Society’s 2024 conference. He showed that multiple human and natural factors likely contributed to the increase in coyote aggression in Stanley Park in 2021. He also demonstrated that certain populations (e.g., lone individuals jogging in the park at night) were more likely to experience aggressive encounters with coyotes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Iris Li presented a poster at the American Society of Mammalogists 2024 conference on BC coyotes’ diet composition. Preliminary findings include that all coyotes are mainly consuming natural prey, but rural coyotes consumed more fruits in their diet. Urban coyotes consumed more anthropogenic food and synanthropic prey as supplements.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Urban Wildlife Project - Raccoons</image:title>
<image:caption>Procyon lotor Raccoons are found in almost every city in North America, but we know surprisingly little about their behavior and cognition. We are studying how raccoons learn and which types of problems they can solve. This knowledge will help us live alongside raccoons more peacefully.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Urban Wildlife Project - Coyotes</image:title>
<image:caption>Canis latrans Coyotes are highly adaptable and successfully live alongside humans in urban areas throughout North America. We study behavioral flexibility in captive coyotes and compare their behavior and problem-solving skills to raccoons and skunks. We are learning how different species adapt to cities in different ways.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Urban Wildlife Project - Striped skunks</image:title>
<image:caption>Mephitis mephitis Skunks are very good at living in cities, despite having a smaller brain (relative to their body size) than raccoons and coyotes. We study skunks to learn if they can solve the same problems as other urban carnivores and to understand how they have adapted to life in the city.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Crocuta crocuta Spotted hyenas live in primate-like societies with strict dominance hierarchies. They also live in a wide-range of habitats throughout sub-Saharan Africa. We study spotted hyenas to better understand the evolution of intelligence, innovative problem solving, and social learning.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Urban Wildlife Project - Asian elephants</image:title>
<image:caption>Elephas maximus Asian elephants live alongside humans in many rural parts of Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. We are studying the connections between personality and problem-solving skills in captive Asian elephants. Ultimately, we hope to help predict which elephants may enter into conflict with humans.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Urban Wildlife Project - Feral cats</image:title>
<image:caption>Felis catus Feral cats are a dominant species in most cities throughout the world. We are using trail cameras to record observations of feral cats to better understand how they interact with other urban wildlife species. This work will help us understand how information and diseases may be spreading through urban wildlife populations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Gaining a comprehensive understanding of how wildlife are adapting to urban environments</image:title>
<image:caption>Our research pushes animal cognition and urban ecology forward by bringing traditional tests of animal cognition into the field. We study carnivores, discovering novel and critical insights into the evolution of intelligence, how species deal with anthropogenic disturbance, and how we can mitigate conflict between humans and urban wildlife.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wyoming Raccoon Project - Join our community</image:title>
<image:caption>An important goal of this project is to encourage everyone to enjoy the wildlife living in their backyards. We inspire public interest in local wildlife by promoting citizen science opportunities through educational events. A large number of our trapping and data-collecting efforts happen on private property, so we are dedicated to creating and maintaining connections with the Laramie community. Please report Laramie, WY., raccoon sightings to raccoon@uwyo.edu.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our team captures and marks wild raccoons and skunks. We collect important biological samples for diet, genetic, and disease testing before releasing them back in their natural environment for cognition experiments. We track the movements of raccoons by fitting them with High Frequency radio collars, as well as ear tags and PIT tags for both raccoons and skunks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wyoming Raccoon Project - About the common raccoon</image:title>
<image:caption>The common raccoon is a small, nocturnal carnivore in the family Procyonidae in the subgenus, Procyon, along with 7 other species of raccoon. They are found in Canada, most of the United States, Mexico and Central America. Unlike many other animals, raccoons have adapted well to human infrastructure and tend to thrive in urban environments.</image:caption>

<image:title>UBC Coyote Project - The UBC Coyote Project: Understanding and mitigating human-coyote conflict across Vancouver</image:title>
<image:caption>Conflict between humans and coyotes is on the rise across North America. Data is needed to better understand changes in coyote behavior, the factors driving these changes, and effective mitigation strategies for co-existence. We are tracking the diets, movement patterns, behaviors, and genetics of individual coyotes across Vancouver, in order to support data-driven management strategies that reduce human-coyote conflict.</image:caption>
